New developments on affordable asthma treatments

Published on September 21, 2019

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) recently made a change that could affect preventive asthma care. This change means some of your asthma medicines may become more affordable if you have a high deductible health plan (HDHP).

Inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) and peak flow meters can now qualify as preventative care. This means that insurance companies may choose to cover this preventative care before you meet your deductible.

This change does not require HDHPs to cover ICS and peak flow meters. So, you will still need to check with your insurance company to see if it covers your medicines.

Also, even if your insurance does cover ICS and peak flow meters, you may still have to cover some of the cost due to cost-sharing.

An HDHP is a plan with a higher deductible than a traditional insurance policy. These plans often have lower monthly premiums. But you must pay more out of pocket before your insurance company starts to pay. An HDHP is a plan with a single deductible of $1,350 or higher or a family deductible of $2,700 or higher.
